Story: In 775 BC, the king of Ilia, Iphitos, established Kotinos as a prize for the Olympic Games winners after consulting the Oracle of the Delphi, Pythia to encourage athletes to participate. The olive wreath was symbolic as they believed it would bring luck and divine protection from the Olympians to the crowned athletes.
