St. Andrew’s X

Alternative Deco

Story: Saint Andrew, the patron of Patras, is directly linked to the city by its tomb, sacred relics, Holy Skull and his martyrdom; the Cross. The prevailing view is that the Cross was X-shaped. However, there has been much debate about the true shape. This view is so widespread that it is now common to refer to X-shaped Crosses as the “Apostle Andrew’s Cross”. It is worth mentioning that X is the symbol of the Russian Navy from which Andrew the Apostle is a patron. The specific variety of the wood composing the original cross has been proven to be olive wood dating back to the first century.
