The Story Behind Liofyllo: A Legacy of Love, Sustainability and Empowerment
Liofyllo is not just an enterprise—it’s a movement, a celebration of sustainability, culture and empowerment. Founded in 2018 in the city of Patras, Greece, our story began with a dream shared by Christos and Alexandra, a couple inspired by love and a commitment to making the world a better place. Rooted in the Mediterranean’s timeless olive groves, Liofyllo represents more than an environmental solution. It’s a tribute to heritage, the strength of women and the power of innovation to spark meaningful change.
A Vision Grounded in Love
For over 23 years, Christos and Alexandra nurture a bond built on trust, resilience and shared ambition. Christos works in the public sector, providing stability for their growing family, while Alexandra, after becoming a mother of two daughters, longed to rediscover her own professional purpose. She often spoke of her dream to lead something meaningful—her own business, driven by her values and creativity.
In 2018, an idea flourished in Christos’s heart after learning about the immense waste generated by Greece’s olive oil industry. Particularly over 150,000 tons of olive leaves are discarded annually in Greece. To most people, these leaves were mere agricultural byproducts, but to Christos, they were an untapped resource, a symbol of possibility.
Alexandra, encouraged by his faith in her, embraced the challenge. Together, they founded Liofyllo, naming it after the olive leaf—a nod to the Mediterranean’s “golden tree” and a symbol of renewal and prosperity.
For Alexandra, Liofyllo represents the fulfillment of a lifelong dream, a chance to lead with purpose and passion. For Christos, it’s a testament to his unwavering support and belief in her vision. Together, they’ve built a legacy that celebrates the power of women, the beauty of heritage and the importance of protecting the planet.
Empowering Women Through Sustainability
From the very beginning, Liofyllo was guided by three core pillars: social entrepreneurship, female empowerment and environmental sustainability. With Alexandra at the helm, the enterprise made it a mission to prioritize the involvement and empowerment of women. Today, all members of the Liofyllo team are women. Each of them is bringing her creativity, dedication and expertise to the project. Liofyllo is a testament to the strength and potential of women in leadership and innovation. By creating opportunities for women to contribute to a sustainable future, the enterprise embodies the idea that female entrepreneurship can drive social and environmental change.
Sustainability at the Heart of Liofyllo
Liofyllo’s mission is to transform agricultural waste into eco-friendly products while honoring the principles of a circular economy. Its first major breakthrough was the creation of the Welia and Marelia panels, sustainable materials made from olive leaves and biodegradable, bio-based adhesives. But Liofyllo’s commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop there. Damaged panels from the production process are repurposed into unique works of art and decorative pieces, inspired by the rich history and culture of Greece. This blend of innovation and tradition ensures that nothing goes to waste, embodying the enterprise’s core philosophy: every leaf matters.
